What Makes Croatian Wine Unique?

Insights from Some of Croatia’s Leading Winemakers

With more than 130 indigenous grape varieties, over 300 defined wine regions, and a winemaking tradition that stretches back thousands of years, Croatia offers wine lovers an experience unlike any other in Europe. Yet what makes Croatian wine truly special cannot be measured by statistics alone. In a world increasingly dominated by large-scale production, Croatia remains a place where wine is deeply personal—shaped by family-owned wineries, centuries-old traditions, and a profound connection to the land. From the rolling hills of Istria to the sun-drenched slopes of the Pelješac Peninsula, each region expresses a distinct sense of place that finds its way into every bottle. To better understand what sets Croatian wine apart, we spoke with representatives from several of our favorite wineries in Istria and on the Pelješac Peninsula, two of Croatia’s premier wine-growing regions and destinations frequently featured in Tasteful Croatian Journeys’ custom wine-focused itineraries.

So, what makes Croatian Wines Unique?

Its scale

  • Croatia has around 20,000 hectares of vineyards in total, compared to more than 700,000 in Italy or nearly 800,000 in France. Wine here is still shaped mostly by small, family-owned producers rather than large-scale industrial production. The region of Istria, for example, has only around 3,000 to 5,000 hectares under vine, which is comparable to a single well-known French appellation such as Chablis or Saint-Émilion rather than an entire major wine region.
  • Many Croatian wineries produce less than 50,000 liters annually, while only around a quarter exceed 100,000 liters, which means guests are often meeting the people who actually make the wine and work in the vineyards throughout the year. That human scale gives Croatian wine a strong sense of authenticity, individuality, and discovery that is becoming increasingly rare in larger wine regions.

         – Gordana Kušec Knežević, Meneghetti Wine Hotel & Winery 5*

Its character

  • We want guests to feel the place before they think about the wine. The salt in the air, the warmth rising from the terraces, the scent of pine and wild herbs,  all of it becomes part of the experience. There’s usually a quiet moment when someone looks out toward the sea and suddenly understands how the landscape finds its way into the glass. If they leave with that sense of connection, that understanding of how nature and craft meet here, then the visit has done what it was meant to do.
  • This coastline (in the Pelješac Peninsula) has a character that can’t be replicated anywhere else. The vineyards sit on steep, rocky slopes that force the vines to work hard, and that struggle gives the wines their depth. The limestone, the sun, the wind off the Adriatic, it all leaves a lasting imprint. Our native varieties aren’t shaped to fit international expectations, they’re expressive, bold, a little stubborn, but always true to where they come from. That honesty and sense of place, is very Croatian.

Its culture

  • Wine here is built into everyday life. Families tend a few vines behind their homes, fishermen talk about vintages, and older generations still remember harvesting by hand on terraces built stone by stone. Guests are always struck by the fact that many of those terraces were built without machinery, just patience and belief that the land was worth the effort. When people stand there and hear that, they understand that wine in Croatia isn’t just something poured into a glass. It’s heritage,  hard work, pride, and continuity that has carried through generations. That’s the heart of wine travel here,  the people, the land, and a culture that stays true to itself without trying to impress.

         – Katharine Anderson Groethe, Korta Katarina

  • Saints Hills Winery is home to our wine. Welcoming guests to our home is always a personal experience, where you put your work, your effort and your dreams in front of them, and hope they will enjoy. Every wine tells a story that is unique, and has roots and a personality. We hope it reflects the beauty of Dalmatia, and the spirit of every loving hour put into that bottle.

         – Ivana Tolj, Saints Hills

What becomes clear through these voices is that Croatian wine is defined less by scale and more by intimacy — between people and place, tradition and craft, land and sea. Whether it is the steep, sun-drenched vineyards of the Pelješac Peninsula or the rolling, truffle-scented hills of Istria, each glass carries a sense of origin that is unmistakable. These are wines shaped not for mass production, but for expression — of landscape, of heritage, and of the families who have tended these vines for generations.

For travelers, this is what makes wine tasting in Croatia so compelling. It is not simply about visiting wineries, but about stepping into a living culture where wine is still made by hand, shared generously, and deeply tied to everyday life. At Tasteful Croatian Journeys, our wine-focused itineraries through Istria and Pelješac are designed to reflect exactly this spirit—pairing exceptional wines with meaningful encounters, unforgettable landscapes, and the people who bring Croatia’s wine story to life.

Our 2026 trip to Croatia and Montenegro with Tasteful Croatian Journeys was truly unforgettable.

What began as a last-minute pivot from our original travel plans to the Middle East became one of the most memorable trips we have ever taken. The itinerary struck the perfect balance of history and culture, vibrant cities, coastal beauty, nature, and relaxation. We credit Tasteful Croatian Journeys (TCJ) for their exceptional planning, thoughtful customization, and the peace of mind that came from knowing every detail would be handled with care.

Throughout the planning process, our travel planner, Tia, was accommodating, responsive, and flexible. She thoughtfully balanced our preferences as a couple while also catering to Stephanie’s particular appreciation for beautifully designed luxury hotels. Behind the scenes, Tia also helped coordinate Stephanie’s special birthday celebrations with David, which made the trip feel even more personal and meaningful.

From the earliest planning stages until the moment we departed for home, Tia, Wanda and Mirela were the consummate professionals and consistently instilled confidence that our journey was in excellent hands.

We especially appreciated the wonderful balance of nature, elegant hotels, historical exploration, and authentic local experiences — a reflection of TCJ’s deep expertise and many years of experience designing exceptional journeys throughout the region.

Highlights of Our Trip

Some of our favorite experiences included:

  • Plitvice Lakes National Park
  • The cooking class at Kameni Dvori
  • Exploring the beautiful coastal cities of Split, Korčula, and Dubrovnik, including walking the fortress walls of Ston and Dubrovnik while learning about Croatia’s remarkable history and resilience during the Croatian War of Independence (1991–1995)

Favorite Hotels

Two hotels stood out in particular:

Hotel Katerina in Orebić
This newly opened boutique hotel was truly an interior designer’s dream. Every room featured its own distinct nautical-inspired theme, thoughtfully designed with bespoke details that reflected the owners’ extraordinary creativity and vision. From elegant maritime touches to beautifully curated furnishings, each space felt completely unique yet consistently tasteful and refined. Our only regret was staying for just one night.

One&Only Portonovi in Montenegro
Equally unforgettable in a different way, our final two nights at One&Only Portonovi were the perfect ending to our trip. We loved the breathtaking setting on Boca Bay, the luxurious accommodations, and the sense of tranquility and refinement throughout the resort.

Exceptional Concierge Support

Beyond the accommodations and tours, what we will remember most was the extraordinary service provided by our local concierge, Mirela.

Mirela was incredibly responsive at all hours — day, evening, and weekends alike. Whenever she arranged restaurant reservations for us, we consistently received wonderful seaside tables with beautiful views. Her local relationships and attention to detail truly elevated our experience.

Most impressively, Mirela went far beyond expectations when we encountered an unexpected delay at customs at the Montenegro–Dubrovnik border on the day of our departure.

At 4:00 PM, we were still stuck at the border, and our flight was scheduled to depart at 5:00 PM. Through what felt like a miracle, Mirela coordinated a taxi pickup, communicated with the airport, and somehow helped ensure that we made our flight. We boarded just minutes after the scheduled departure time. What could have become a travel disaster instead became a memorable example of extraordinary customer service.

Wonderful Guides and Drivers

Finally, we were consistently touched by the kindness, hospitality, and national pride of the drivers and guides we met throughout the trip. We especially appreciated:

  • Ivan, our driver in Dubrovnik, who took exceptional care driving us back to Dubrovnik after David became ill
  • Ana, our guide in Split, who passionately shared the city’s Jewish heritage and history
  • Sandra Bečir and our driver, Oruš, in Montenegro, whose warmth and knowledge made our time there especially memorable

This was truly an unforgettable journey, and we wholeheartedly recommend Tasteful Croatian Journeys to anyone considering travel to Croatia and Montenegro. We look forward to recommending TCJ to our friends and family for years to come.

Condé Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist for 2026

New York City, Tuesday, March 10, 2026

My dear friends, family, colleagues, partners, esteemed and most interesting travelers, and Tasteful Croatian Journeys Team.

Just in time to help me celebrate another substantial birthday on March 22, 2026, my gift has arrived.

I am delighted to share that I have been named a Condé Nast Traveler Top Travel Specialist for 2026 — and especially proud to be recognized as the first specialist for Croatia ever included on this prestigious list for the past 20 years.

This recognition comes at a particularly meaningful moment as we celebrate 30+ years since founding VisitCroatia.com – Tasteful Croatian Journeys, a company born of a lifelong passion for travel and a deep personal connection to Croatia — the place of my birth and a country that continues to inspire my work every day.

My journey into travel began long before founding the company. Born when it was the Italian city of Fiume — today the Croatian city of Rijeka — I spent my early childhood in refugee camps in Italy and later immigrated to the United States. Travel awakened my curiosity about the world. Adventures across Latin America, Africa, and Asia shaped a lifelong belief that travel is one of the most powerful ways to understand cultures, build friendships, and expand our horizons.

When I returned to Croatia in 1994, as the country emerged from its War of Independence, I felt a calling to share the beauty, history, and soul of this remarkable place with travelers from around the world. That inspiration became VisitCroatia.com – Tasteful Croatian Journeys, where for the past three decades we have designed thoughtful, immersive journeys across Croatia and the Adriatic region. I have approached every itinerary much like composing a musical work — carefully listening to each traveler’s wishes and weaving together the people, places, and experiences that create a harmonious journey.

Being recognized by Condé Nast Traveler is a wonderful validation of the intent, dedication, and expertise built over many years. It also deepens my commitment to continue this work with even greater care and alacrity — always striving to remain worthy of the confidence placed in me.

This recognition also reflects the extraordinary people who work beside me — a team dedicated to care, integrity, and excellence. I have been incredibly fortunate to mentor and work alongside a remarkable team that shares the same philosophy of care, ethics, and excellence in service.

Tia Lovisa Moreira, the Senior Top Luxury Travel Designer at Tasteful Croatian Journeys, whom I have had the pleasure of mentoring and guiding, designs exceptional journeys across Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, and Bosnia & Herzegovina, and more…. Her work has been recognized by Travel + Leisure as among the best for the past two years — a testament to her extraordinary talent and dedication.

In Rijeka, Croatia, Mirela Benić, the Tasteful Croatian Journey Concierge, is the quiet force behind every seamless journey. She is our travelers’ guardian angel — the thoughtful concierge who, behind the scenes, accompanies them with care and grace, ensuring that when dining, the best table is reserved for them and that every moment on the ground unfolds with comfort and confidence. She is also our Product Development specialist — our team’s “Sherlock” — who continuously searches for, interviews, evaluates, and uncovers exceptional guides, hoteliers, captains, artisans, and partners who enable us to deliver experiences worthy of the world’s most sophisticated and discerning travelers.

And Diego, our Operations and IT professional, who ensures that everything functions with precision. His disciplined approach keeps us organized, technically sharp, and always moving along the straight and narrow that leads to excellence in execution.

Travel is about people — the travelers we serve, the communities we visit, and the professionals who bring every journey to life. In that respect, I truly feel that I have hit the lottery for good fortune to collaborate with such exceptional colleagues who share our philosophy and commitment to thoughtful, meaningful travel.

To our wonderful travelers, to our partners across Croatia, Slovenia, the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the island, the cities, the tiny towns, the sailors along the Adriatic, and to my extraordinary team — thank you for being part of this journey.

As the adventure continues, my heart dances to the happy notes of gratitude.

Travel + Leisure Recognition – A-List Specialist 2026

Prestige, Reaffirmed.
Honored once again by Travel + Leisure.

Tia Lovisa Moreira: A proud repeat honor from Travel + Leisure A-List
It is with immense pride, deep gratitude, and genuine joy that I share the wonderful news that our Vice President, Tia Lovisa Moreira, has once again been named to the 2026 Travel + Leisure A-List — the distinguished directory of the world’s most influential travel specialists. This recognition is a beautiful affirmation of Tia’s extraordinary destination expertise, her deeply rooted local relationships, and her intuitive, thoughtful way of curating journeys that are both meaningful and unforgettable. It is also, for me, a moment that reflects the heart and history of VisitCroatia.com – Tasteful Croatian Journeys — more than 30 years after I first set foot into the extraordinary discovery of Croatia and its neighboring countries with nothing more than passion, belief, and a dream.

Tia has not only honored that original vision — she has elevated it. With grace, brilliance, and unwavering dedication, she has carried it forward and refined it into something even more exceptional. She embodies our philosophy of luxury travel: authentic, personal, meticulously crafted, and delivered with genuine care. Watching our travelers fall in love not only with Croatia but also with the artistry and attention to detail behind every experience she designs fills my heart with gratitude.

On a personal note, Tia honors the intent of my dream in ways that move me deeply. She has grown into a remarkable leader and an extraordinary caretaker of the wonder of luxury travel — thoughtful, elegant, and passionately committed to excellence. She makes me proud every single day.

My heartfelt thanks to Travel + Leisure for this esteemed recognition. To our cherished travelers, thank you for the trust you continue to place in us. And to our exceptional professional team, along with our treasured network of local friends and partners — your dedication, creativity, loyalty, and commitment are the foundation upon which these journeys come to life.

Warmest congratulations to all of the outstanding travel experts recognized on this year’s A-List. It is a true privilege for Tia to stand among such distinguished peers. She makes me — and our entire team — immensely proud, and I am confident she will continue to elevate the standard of excellence that this honor represents.

With gratitude, celebration, and a full heart,

The clients were absolutely delightful, and judging from their heartfelt comments, they were thrilled with their time onboard S.Y. Cool Change:

“We had the most wonderful time on the S.Y. Cool Change. The captain and chef were both marvelous. We will definitely sail with them again. Our time with them exceeded every expectation. Do not hesitate to book with them.
Croatia is a beautiful country with very friendly people and fabulous wine. It was our best vacation ever!

Daniel Ruzow – Clifton Park, NY

Our journey with Wanda, Tia and her dedicated team began last January at the NY International Travel show when we met for the first time. We began planning our first trip to Croatia in earnest by February and by the middle of March we were set. Tia provided insights to the cities and sites we might visit and after several exchanges of ideas we agreed on an itinerary for my wife and myself that included Dubrovnik, Kotor, Split, and boat excursion to Hvar and adjacent islands, Plitvice National Park, Zagreb, Rovinj and lastly Trieste. Tia arranged for drivers to shuttle us to the various cities and sites and guides to explore specific cities and sites. All of our drivers spoke excellent English and were friendly and accommodating. We were particularly interested in understanding the history of the Jewish populations in the region and the guides provided were very knowledgeable.
The hotels selected by VisitCroatia were all excellent 4 or 5 star and the staff were helpful and responsive. With their help I booked all of our restaurants for dinner, but local concierge Mirela, vetted my choices and was quite responsive whenever we sought guidance.
After we completed our touring in Trieste, we were headed to Padova, Italy on our own. In discussions with Tia, she understood our interest in visiting sites known for their Byzantine mosaics. She recommended that we consider visiting a unique school in Spilimbergo a short detour off our route to Padova from Trieste. We contacted the Scuola Mosaicisti del Friuli and spent a marvelous hour touring the unique and varied artwork present throughout the halls of the school. Amazing artistry of the students that come from 22 countries to learn the craft needed for restoration as well as new creations.

Through both the planning and actual tour, I was impressed by VisitCroatia’s knowledge, logistical prowess, and professionalism. Having planned and managed over 20 trips to Europe for us and our family members, my expectations were high. We were not disappointed in any way and view this trip of 16 days, one of our most enjoyable.

Mendi Schilit – Los Angeles, CA

The itinerary planned, after discussions and changes to meet our interests and preferences was wonderful.

Our concierge on the ground, Mirela was always available and responsive to our requests.

Our tour guides in Rovinj, Split and Dubrovnik were excellent, personable and knowledgeable.

At the strong recommendation by Wanda, we stayed at Villa Korta Katarina in Orebic. As it turned out, we were the only guests in the hotel (only eight rooms) while there, and the service was above and beyond.

Although Rovinj is not in the usual itinerary for many Croatia visitors, we very much enjoyed our visit, touring Rovinj and surrounding areas. We loved the Grand Park Hotel, a modern, five-star beauty, near town and definitely a great choice.

Our day trip to Montenegro was a good choice, and we had a young enthusiastic guide who showed us a wonderful time. We were traveling before the high season, which made our crossing the border quick without long lines for passport check, which can be a problem during high season.

Overall, we could not have been more pleased with the itinerary, hotels, guides and drivers.

George & Diane Vlaisavich – Lake Oswego, OR

To the Tasteful Croatian Journeys team,

To begin, here is how we have described our trip to others:

George: The entire trip was Perfect. Literally everything was perfect.

Diane: The trip was an 11 out of 10.

For starters, all the factors that can affect travel and that are out of both of our control cooperated. All the flights were on time and uneventful. The weather was always comfortable. We were healthy and felt positive. No language barriers anywhere.
The itinerary, hotels, locations, sites, history, service, food, wine, family heritage day, were spectacular. In addition, every transport and guide was on schedule and professional. The duration at each location was just right. I really appreciate solid execution and the team delivered. Further, I absolutely loved never having to drive or park a car. What an unexpected treat. That removes so much daily stress.

We could go on and on about how unique and special each day was. The goal was a Taste of Croatia from north to south, and it was indeed executed Tastefully by your team. Terrific choices.

Here is an example of just how every day actually exceeded expectations. Day one we landed on time in Pula and were able to experience the Arena just before sunset. Very cool. (We found out later Diane’s dad performed there in the 1990’s with a music group.) Then we arrived at the Hotel Adriatic amidst the buzz of an imminent event. Just outside our hotel window in the square was the St Euphemia celebration, complete with a music stage, food carts, and all kinds of vendors. After 30 hours of travel, it was time to party. The hotel had generously supplied us with anniversary beverages and treats to get us going.
We then engaged the party scene, enjoyed the authentic music, tasted cheese from a local farmer (who wound up being our guide the next day), and were just captivated by this extraordinary spontaneous moment. Then to top it off, the town of Rovinj this year decided to bring back the St. Euphemia glorious fireworks display!! We are thinking, seriously, is this experience for real?? We just landed in Croatia, the night is electric with energy, we are in this charming town on the Adriatic, it’s our anniversary, and this is the first few hours of the trip. Can it get any better? The answer to that question was that the adventure was just getting started and everyday delivered a high the level of joy!!!!

Yes, we would be happy to share our thoughts and experiences with you. We will have to figure out a time for that.

In the meantime, your team delivered a once in a lifetime phenomenal experience and memory. We are promoting Croatia and Tasteful Croatia Journeys to everyone.

We deeply thank you for making it happen.

Margaret Seron – Boulder, CO

We just returned from trip of a lifetime to Croatia!

After a lot of research on my part I chose to book a two-week trip with tasteful Croatian Journeys (VisitCroatia.com).

They offer excellent, personal concierge service and put together an amazing trip. We started in Split, staying 2 nights at a wonderful hotel and touring the sites, including Krka National Park. We then boarded a beautiful Catamaran, “Cool Change'” for 7 days and nights visiting a different island each day. Our captain was skilled and friendly. Our chef made the most amazingly healthy meals. Finally, we arrived at the marina near Dubrovnik, visited the old city and then stayed 3 nights at a boutique hotel in Cavtat. The trip was perfect!

Croatia is a beautiful country and the people are friendly. We have all vowed to return ASAP! And we will certainly book through Tasteful Croatian Journeys again. Don’t hesitate to contact them!

Jim & Jennifer Winter – Highlands Ranch, CO

Hello Tia,

The trip was awesome. The accommodations are all stellar. Would definitely want to stay in them again if we return to Croatia.

Among our guides, Lea in Split was an 11 on a scale of 1 to 10. Leia in Korcula was extremely knowledgable, but not quite as personable as Lea. Nikola in Dubrovnik was knowledgable but appeared to be suffering from end of the season burnout. I think he just wanted it to be over. Mislav, who guided our bike tour though the Konavle Valley, was excellent. We really enjoyed him. Please forgive me, but the name of the lady who guided us through Krka national park escapes me. With that said, we very much enjoyed her.

The restaurants were all good to excellent. One item of note would be ZOI. If anybody asked me whether they should go to ZOI, I would tell the at the food is generally good but the portion size is laughably small (which is inversely proportional to the prices). We would not go back there, but would go back to all of the others. We especially enjoyed Kanoba Aterina, Lola Wine Bar, and Dubravka 1836.

The boats and their crews were also excellent.

Sorry I do not have time for a call and a huge THANK YOU to one and all at Tasteful Croatian Journeys for an amazing trip.
