The Meštrović Gallery
This small gallery is the former studio and residence of the Croatian sculptor. Works are placed inside the home and throughout the garden. The atmosphere is very welcoming for a relaxing and inspiring visit. The gallery is a short taxi from Diocletian’s Palace.

Visit Local Wineries
Zinfandel, the grape made famous by Californian vineyards, has strong roots tied very closely to a grape that is grown within kilometers of Split. Discover the rich winemaking history found in Croatia and this region with a visit to local wineries for culture, history and wine tasting!
If you want to learn about wine without leaving Split, make your way to Restaurant Zinfandel. Explore Diocletian’s Palace
The literal and cultural heart of Split was created for the Roman Emperor Diocletian in 295 AD as a seaside retirement home. Today, the massive limestone and marble structure is a city in itself, home to over 2000 locals, restaurants, boutique hotels and shops as well as remarkable preserved architecture. The smooth stone streets, and narrow alleyways are framed by high arched structures creating an immersive experience.
The entire structure and interior of the palace was named as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1979. Protected by walls over 20 meters high and only four entrances the Palace is a fortress. Three entrance gates framed by a pair of towers: The Silver Gate, the Golden Gate and the Iron Gate. The fourth entrance, the Bronze Gate, originally rose directly from the sea, but today meets the vibrant Riva, waterfront promenade. The interior of the palace feels a bit like a labyrinth, getting lost and finding your way to a familiar spot can be a pleasant adventure.
The Palace is the home to Split’s most interesting historical sites, many which were created in the medieval period.
The Peristil is the most famous of the open squares, where Diocletian used to make public addresses and hold celebrations. On this square you will notice a sphinx carved from granite 3500 years ago during the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III. Overlooking the Peristil is the Bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Dominus, you can climb all the way to top for a spectacular view! Other sites include the Vestibule, Jupiter’s Temple, the Split Ethnographic Museum and the Split City Museum.
Head to the Beach
Croatia’s second largest city is well known for its rich history, but often overlooked as a beach destination. However, both east and west of Split’s historic center, the shoreline is freckled with inviting coves and picturesque beaches. These well-maintained swimming spots are entirely open to the public, though some offer privately managed areas with umbrellas and lounge chairs. Whether seeking a refreshing swim on a hot summer’s day, or simply a place to relax in the sun, Split’s stunning coast has much to offer.
At the base of Marjan hill are two popular pebble beaches, Kašjuni and Kaštelet. Kaštelet beach sits just beneath the Meštrović Gallery. Nearby, Bene Beach is surrounded by pine forest and offers excellent shade, a wonderful choice for a hot summer day.
On the other side of town (east of Diocletian’s Palace), you will find beaches such as Bačvice, Ovčice, Firule, Trstenik and Žnjan. Bačvice Beach is a sandy beach that has long been a popular spot for locals. The atmosphere is active and lively, attracting generations of families to gather and play under the sun. The boardwalk is lined with restaurants, bars, and ice cream parlors. The clear, shallow water of Bačvice is also the birthplace of “picigin,” a game played with a small rubber ball which is now a protected piece of cultural heritage. On warm summer days, many locals can be seen playing the game, throwing the balls to teammates and keeping it from the water.
South of Split, the Makarska Riviera is easily reachable by car in less than an hour. This 60km strip of coast stretching from Omiš to the Neretva Delta is home to some of Croatia’s most stunning beaches. Of particular note are the picturesque beaches of Brela, which are a favorite of leading travel publications and consistently ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world . The symbol of Brela is a small rock island, known as the Brela Stone, located just off the main beach, Punta Rata. Not far is the postcard perfect Podrače Beach, a small pebbled crescent shaded by pine trees and tamarisks.
